Recognized in France as the best pianist of her time, Hélène de Montgeroult (1764-1836) was named professor of piano at the Conservatory in 1795, although she never gave a public concert. «Free woman», she adopted values of true modernity, refusing to take refuge in the status of victim despite adventures as incredible as they are unhappy. His life led her to compose music of interiority, refusing the then expanding «virtuosity trade».
Thanks to her alternative values and this distance with her time, without concessions or artistic compromises, Hélène de Montgeroult now belongs to ours. Described as a «learned musician» and therefore little understood in France at the time, she nevertheless composed a music where emotion is deeply interwoven with science. (excerpt from Jérôme Dorival, La Marquise et la Marseillaise).
